Social and Environmental Responsibility

In UNACEM Ecuador we believe that the key for a sustainable industrial development is based on the opportune management of our impact and in the responsible work with our publics of interest. For a socially and environmentally responsible, sustainable management that generates value for our shareholders and stakeholders, UNACEM Ecuador focuses their actions in the following pillars:

We work to achieve excellence in Health and Safety, our fundamental values.

UNACEM Ecuador has a Health and Safety Management System called VIDA (LIFE). It is composed of 10 elements with a clear focus on prevention, control and improvement of all the processes and involves 75% of our personnel through the allocation of specific roles.

We are committed to the preservation of the environment and the mitigation of our more important environmental impact.

Since 2010 UNACEM Ecuador has substituted fossil fuels with biomass from the African palm husk, a residue from the oil industry. In 2015 the Ministry of Environment granted our environmental license for co-processing oils, making us the first authorized cement plant to do it, which provides an environmentally sustainable final disposal. Currently, around 30% of our fuels are alternative.

We are committed to the development of a talented, diverse and competent workforce.

UNACEM Ecuador gives support to the UNACEM Institute, a technical training institution created specifically to tend to the training and development needs of the company’s workforce. UNACEM Institute has the following programs:

  • Leaders in development.
  • Cement engineers.
  • Certification of inspectors.
  • Effective commercial force.

We offer a range of products and services that contribute to the sustainability of the construction industry.

UNACEM Ecuador has made available for their final users two training programs: the Maestro Seguro program for promoting safety and good use of cement in construction works. More than 6 thousand workers have been trained since its launch in 2012; and the Training School Selvalegre, in alliance with the Ecuadorian Institute of Cement and Concrete (INECYC), born with the purpose of contributing to the technical education and safety for construction workers through a 7-week theoretical and practical program.

We encourage dialogue with environmental community representatives focusing our efforts in the area of influence.

UNACEM Ecuador works hand in hand with the town councils (representatives) of the communities in the area, in six action axes: development of human and social talent; social, health and environment investment; socioeconomic development; employment and transportation; communication and dialogue, and strategic alliances.

We develop our activities in a frame of ethics and values to guarantee the company’s optimal performance.

UNACEM Ecuador has an applicable code of conduct for all employees and directives of the company. Our personnel, suppliers and clients are educated about our code of conduct, which determines the guidelines against possible cases of corruption and violation of human rights whose risks have been previously identified.

We are interested in the development of strategic partners in our value chain.

For UNACEM Ecuador, health and safety are fundamental values incorporated into our corporate culture; hence our commitment to share and promote the best practices with different players in our value chain. Volante Seguro is our program to promote a culture of safety on the road between approximately 200 transporters and 330 contractor drivers.

We hold constant conversations to consolidate our relations and trust with our interested parties.

UNACEM Ecuador shows continually through their actions their commitment to sustainable development mediated by constant dialogue, by means of different communication means. The Sustainability Report is for UNACEM the main communication tool regarding our high relevance aspects for a responsible and sustained management.
