As a product of UNACEM’s acquisition of Lafarge Cementos S.A., UNACEM Ecuador was born on November 2014. We are a business with more than 60 years of experience and leader in the Peruvian cement market.

In Ecuador, through its product Selvalegre, UNACEM Ecuador has built opportunities to develope the country’s infrastructure, for 4 decades. UNACEM Ecuador has its headquarters in Quito and a cement production plant located in Otavalo. With the increase in installed capacity to a total of 1.6 million metric tons per year, we have expanded our availability and our coverage to provide better services to our clients with their construction needs.

  • 2005

    The French construction materials group Lafarge acquires the Cemento Selvalegre plant in Ecuador.

  • 2007

    With an investment of more than 120 million US dollars, the Industrial Plant’s expansion project in Otavalo increases its production capacity.

  • 2008

    Within the expansion plan, called the Llama Project, the new cement mill, bulk bag filler and a new warehouse for the palletizer are inaugurated.

  • 2009

    The new kiln is opened and consequently a new production line is created, which doubles the production capacity of the Industrial Plant in Otavalo. Cemento Selvalegre renovates its image.

  • 2010

    The Volante Seguro campaign is launched. This campaign focuses on a Road Safety program, with 450 participating contractor drivers. The Quinde Project’s construction begins in the mining concession Selva Alegre, to strengthen industrial safety and environmental management policies. Cemento Selvalegre hits the market with a new image, in an anti-humidity packaging, for more durability in humid conditions, such as the coastal and tropical regions.

    Marketing of the first expert product in range: Armaduro expert in prefabricated products. Start of fossil fuel substitution.

  • 2012

    The Maestro Seguro campaign is launched, a program to train construction workers, promoting good practices for industrial safety in works and good use of cement. Campeón is introduced to the Ecuadorian market, an expert cement for finishes. The company subscribes to the Business Network for a Child Labor Free Ecuador.

  • 2013

    The project to substitute fossil fuel with biomass is approved as a “Clean Development Mechanism” by the CDM Executive Board of the United Nations UNFCCC. The project to eliminate bottlenecks to optimize production at the Industrial Plant begins.

  • 2014

    The Peruvian group UNACEM acquires the Ecuadorian Company, now named UNACEM Ecuador. The Quinde Project (Quindeis hummingbird in Quechua) is launched, an innovative project pioneer in South America to eliminate security risks and minimize the environmental impact in the limestone quarry. The expansion of the palletizer takes place.

  • 2015

    UNACEM Ecuador receives the top certification as an Eco-Efficient Company from the Ministry of the Environment, as recognition for its waste management projects with clinker and optimization of energy consumption. UNACEM Ecuador becomes the first cement plant nationwide to receive the License for Co-Processing of Hazardous Waste.

  • 2016

    UNACEM Ecuador participates in Habitat III and subscribes to the Global Pact, the biggest international initiative of social responsability led by the United Nations.

  • 2017

    In 2017, UNACEM Ecuador launches the new kiln filter in production line 1 in the plant located in Otavalo, with an investment of more than $8.9 million dollars, UNACEM Ecuador receives a recognition from the Global Pact for our good practices in sustainable development.

  • 2018

    UNACEM Ecuador begins the destruction process of 2.5 tons of CFC gasses. The Ministry of Environment grants UNACEM the certification as an Eco-Efficient Company again. The Anti-Humidity Packaging is launched in the market.
